Can someone give me a good beach to go to in Southern California near Hollywood?

I am going to be staying in Los Angeles in/around Hollywood and I need to know what a good beach to go to is... can anyone give me any? How is Venice Beach? Any good beaches in Laguna Beach? Preferably somewhere that we can surf and hang out on the beach till late. Thanks!
