Is it true the Confederates were the ones who started the Civil War.?

They wanted slavery, they seceded from the rest of the states, and they attacked Fort Sumter. I mean the North did a few bad things themselves, even before the war why would anyone wanted forced human labor in the US if it is considered "Land of the Free" ?
